12 Apr 1861 Location: Charelston Harbor, NC Southern forces were attempting to seize as many union forts as possible, Lincoln told southern leaders the north would not fire upon the south unless fired upon first. The southern forces fired and the war began. First Battle of Bull Run 21 Jul 1861 Location: Bull Run River Northern forces marched from Washington D.C. expecting a quick victory. After intially pushing the southern forces back, southern forces charged at the union soldiers with their rebel yell, forcing the north to retreat. A confederate victory. Monitor vs Merrimack 8 Mar 1862 Location: Norfolk, VA The South had covered an abandoned northern ship with iron in an effort to break the union blockade. The north countered with there own iron clad. The ships fought to draw, but its considered a union victory because they kept the south in the harbour. Battle of Shiloh 6 Apr 1862 Location: Coronith, MS/ Shiloh, TN Led by Grant, the north defeated the south in the bloodiest 2 day battle of the civil war. Grant earned the reputation as the butcher of men. Congress wanted him removed but lincoln said " I can't spare this man; he fights." Capture of New Orleans 25 Apr 1862 Location: New Orleans, LA Union forces led by admiral David G. Faragot, suprised the south by capturing New Orleans. The city was a major trade city of south & its capture meant less supplies for confederate soldiers. Battle of Antetium 17 Sep 1862 Location: Antetium Creek, MD Due to Gen. Mcellan's hesitation the north was attacked by Lee's forces. The North was able to hold of the south in the bloodiest single day battle of the war. Hesitation by Mcellan caused lincoln to replace him. Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. Siege of Vicksburg 1 Dec 1862 Location: Vicksburg, MS The fight ended on July 4th, 1863. Over 9 months Grant led a siege on vicksburg, finally gaining victory on July 4th, 1863. The north now gained control of the mississippi river. Thu splitting the confederacy in two. After this victory pres. Lincoln named grant commander of U.S. army. Battle of Fredicksburg & Chancellorisville 13 Dec 1862 Location: Fredicksburg & Chancellorisville, VA At Fredicksburg Gen. Burnside mistakenly thought he could charge up a hill & overtake the confederates. The union suffered heavy losses & burnside resinged as general. At Chancellorisville the confederates scored another victory but at a high cost. Gen. Stonewall Jackson was shot and died 8 days later. Battle of Gettysburg 1 Jan 1863 Gettysburg, VA Northern & southern forces met by accident at gettysburg. The first two days saw the south push the north back to cemetary ridge. On the 3rd day Lee sent Gen pickett over the ridge where they were targets for the north. The south had to retreat the failed charge. This changed the tide of the war. Sherman's March to the Sea 16 Nov 1864 Location: Atlanta to Savanna, GA His march which ended Dec. 21 was to convince confederate people to abandon the confederate cause. They didn't destroy towns but stole things and burned houses of people who rebeled. Surrender at Appomattax Court House 9 Apr 1865 Location: Appomattax, Washington D.C. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his 28,000 troops to Gen. Grant. Earlier Lee abandoned confederate capitals to keep his troops and meet back up with the remaining southern army. Later when Lee tried to retreat union forces cut him off and he was forced to surender. Lincoln's Assasination 14 Apr 1865 Location: Fords Theater, Washington D.C. Abraham Lincoln was killed by John Wikes Booth, a confederate sympathizer and actor. He killed him 5 days after the south surrendered. A big manhunt there was for Booth how was killed 12 days later. |
