1. george washington 1789-1796
He was the first president of the United States. How handled the job over presedency paved the way for future presidents.

2. John Adams 1797-1801
John Adams was the first vice president and second president. He was from Massachussetts. People were upset at him for being neutral for the French and Britain war. This was a wise choice even though it didn't seem like one at the time.
3. Thomas jefferson
Jefferson is famous for buying the Lousiana purchase. This doubled the size of the U.S. He also sent lewis and clark on an expedition west to discover more land. He got reelected in 1804 and won. He established the embargo acts but reeapleded them because they hurt U.S. economy.
4. james madison
He wanted a strong government. He is known for being the first president for asking congress to declare war. He was pressured because of British impressment of U.S. ships.
5. james monroe
Monroe was president during the era of good feelings. He is best known for the Monroe doctrine. This stated that Europeon countries couldn't settle in the western hemisphere.
6. John quincy adams
He was John Adams son. He was elected president very conteversially. He lost in electoral votes to Andrew jackson but nethier canidate won majoraty. Henry clay who was part of the house of Reps. told people to vote for adams and in return getting the job of secratary of state.
7. Andrew jackson
Jackson was upset about losing in 1824 so he came back and won in 1828. He was a man of the people and wanted the people to have a say. He opposed the national bank saying it was unconstitutional. He also passed the indian removal act.
8. Martin Van Buren
He was the first president to be born in the U.S. He helped for the Democratic party. He was the Vice President for Andrew Jackson. He easily won the presidental election. After he took office they went in to a economic depression.
9. William Henry Harrison
He easily won his election becoming the 9th president of the U.S. He was a military hero before and he had the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too." He gave a long speech in the freezing cold and the rain and died later from pnumonia.
10. John Tyler
He became president after William Henry Harrison died and he was vice president. He was part of the whig party but he didn't give listen to their wishes.
11. James k. polk
He wanted to expand america and he used this to gain votes. His supporters said Fifty-four Forty or Fight" He also wanted to annex Texas.
12. ZAchary taylor
He fought in the army for many years fighting in many battles. He was in the white house when slavery was a big issue. He wanted to keep the states together. He fought with congress over emmiting California as a free state.
13. Milliard Fillimore
He succeded Taylor after he died. He was against slavery but enforced the fugitive slave act because he was trying to keep the states together. He didn't get reelcted.
14. FRANKLIN PIERCE
He was the democratic candidate for the 1853 election. He was POTUS during a time of peace. He wanted to expand the U.S. He helped pass the Kansas-Nebraska act. This was his downfall.
15. James Buchanan
He was a democrat who was opposed to slavery. He did try to keep the peace between pr0 slavery and anti slavery. He passed the Dredd scott Desicion which angered people from the north but people from the south were happy.
16. Abraham Lincoln
He was a republican who opposed slavery. He helped start the civil war. A month after he was elected the civil war started. He was actually a smart military leader. His Emancipation Proclamation helped end slavery. And he gave the famous gettysburg adress. He was assinated by John Wilkes Booth right before the union victory.
